ER, Urgent Care, or Virtual Visit? Where to Go and What It’ll Cost You
When unexpected health issues arise, it can be easy to panic and head straight for the emergency room. But depending on the situation, there may be faster and far more affordable options. Choosing between the ER, urgent care, or a virtual visit can make a big difference in both wait times and out-of-pocket costs.
Emergency Room (ER)
The ER is designed for life-threatening or severe conditions, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, head trauma, or uncontrolled bleeding. It's the right choice when every second counts. However, that level of care comes at a price.
According to the Health Care Cost Institute, the average ER visit costs over $1,300, not including additional tests or treatments. And if you have a high-deductible health plan, much of that cost could fall on you. You’ll also likely face longer wait times, especially for non-critical issues.
Urgent Care
Urgent care centers are ideal for non-emergency conditions that still require prompt attention. Think minor fractures, flu symptoms, infections, or sprains. They typically have shorter wait times than ERs and cost significantly less.
A study by UnitedHealth Group found that the average urgent care visit costs about $180, compared to over $2,000 for a typical ER visit to address the same issue. Most centers also offer evening and weekend hours, making them convenient for after-hours care.
Virtual Visit (Telehealth)
For many basic needs, like rashes, sinus infections, or medication refills, virtual visits are the most cost-effective and convenient choice. Many health plans now cover telemedicine, and some even offer $0 copays.
You can consult with a licensed provider from your phone or computer, often within minutes. It's a smart option when you’re not feeling well but don’t need hands-on care.
Know Before You Go
Understanding the best place to seek care saves you time, money, and stress. When in doubt, call your health plan’s nurse advice line or telehealth provider; they can guide you to the right level of care based on your symptoms.
Being informed doesn’t just help your wallet; it helps ensure you get the right care, at the right time, in the right place. To learn more about your health plan and the options available to you and your family, contact our office today.
