David & Rachel
David is a semi-retired CPA that I met while doing a presentation for an Accountants networking group that he belongs to. Rachel has moderate dementia.
My comments on Medicare Supplement plans intrigued him. During the presentation I mentioned, as I always do, that Medicare Supplements do not include coverge for medications and typically are in the $225/mo range.
He admitted that he had not reviewed his Medicarage coverage for either of them since enrolling over 15 years ago!
It was so long ago that both he and his wife were on a grandfathered Supplement that did in fact include medications.
The only problem...it was nearly $900/mo for EACH of them!!!
I suggested they both switch to a new Supplement Plan G (1a in MA) and add standalone Drug Plans.
He was skeptical that the coverage he was paying nearly $1800/mo for could be replicated with a $220/mo Supplement and a $15/mo Drug Plan but it was indeed the coverage he ultimately chose after many phone calls offering assurances that the the coverage was virtually identical*.
Net Result: Switched both to the Supplement Plan G saving $16,000/yr! After deducting the cost of their Drug Plans (hers was $52/mo and his was $15) and the $240 Part B deducitble they are now responsible for they still netted $14,716 in savings!
