Leah
Leah was introduced to us by her adult son when she was living in Boston and contemplating retirement.
She had questions about Medicare and how health insurance would work after leaving her Employer's group coverage. We discussed options and ultimately she chose an Advantage plan with a regional carrier.
She was very pleased with the plan and all was going well until she decided to escape the cold and spend the winter in SC. While there, she tripped on a curb and shattered her elbow.
Her insurance plan (as all do) provides emergency coverage wherever you are in the US (and frequently outside). The problem arose when several weeks later she needed an appointment with an Orthopedic Surgeon to see if surgery would be necessary.
When she called the carrier to ask for an in-network provider outside of her region, the carrier representative told her she would need to come home.
She called me to ask if there were any other options.
Solution: We suggested a Medigap Plan but she rejected that suggestion becuase she did not want to have a monthly premium. Alternatively, we recommend an Advantage plan with a national carrier that would allow her to keep her Boston area physicians but also allowed her to find an in-network Orthopedist near her winter home.
